IllustrationAllan Smith, from St. Vincent, and Gloria Smith, who grew up in Panama, started selling pastries out of their station wagon at cricket games in 1958. A storefront followed in the early 1960s, then this one on Nostrand Avenue, and the bakery has been a fixture of Little Caribbean ever since, run by three generations of the family.
The currant roll is the thing: flaky, buttery pastry rolled around spiced currants, Take a beef or saltfish patty with it, and carry home a loaf of hard dough bread, a bag of coconut drops or a slice of sponge cake.
Editor’s tip
Buy currant rolls by the half-dozen — one for now, the rest won't last the walk home.
