HELL'S KITCHEN, MANHATTAN
Amy's Bread (Hell's Kitchen)
The 1992 original on Ninth Avenue — hand-made breads, pastries and layer cake in a tiny storefront.
Amy Scherber opened her bakery in 1992 in a 650-square-foot storefront on Ninth Avenue, in an 1896 building that once held a fish market, with five employees and a commitment to hand-made, traditional breads. It has grown into a citywide name since, but this narrow shop between 46th and 47th is still the original.
Come in the morning for a coffee and a breakfast pastry, or in the afternoon for a slice of layer cake. Buy a loaf for the next day on your way out. The shop is small, so plan to take most things to go.
