JACKSON HEIGHTS, QUEENS
Angel Indian Restaurant
Bib Gourmand cooking on 37th Avenue — goat biryani under a pastry lid, sliced open at the table.
Chef Amrit Pal Singh opened Angel in 2019, named it for his daughter, and cooked his way to a Michelin Bib Gourmand within two years. The restaurant has since moved into a larger room on 37th Avenue, but the kitchen's signatures came with it: the goat dum biryani sealed under a pastry lid and sliced open at the table, lassuni gobi, and a fish moilee that argues quietly for the vegetarian-and-seafood focus of the menu.
The food is halal, much of it vegetarian, and the room is BYOB — a rarity at this level of cooking. It is the strongest case in Jackson Heights that the neighborhood's Indian food is not just about steam tables and sweets counters.
Editor’s tip
Order the goat dum biryani when you sit down — it takes time, and the tableside opening is worth it.
