FOREST HILLS, QUEENS

Asian Bowl

A modest Queens Boulevard kitchen that leads with Burmese cooking — tea leaf salad and mohinga.

The name undersells it. Behind a plain Queens Boulevard storefront, this small, takeout-minded kitchen leads with Burmese cooking — still rare in New York — with Thai, Chinese and Japanese dishes filling out the back of the menu.

Order from the Burmese side. Tea leaf salad, laphet thoke, is the star: fermented tea leaves tossed with crunchy beans and split peas, fried garlic, peanuts, dried shrimp, tomato, cabbage and lime. Mohinga, the fish-and-noodle soup that many Burmese eat for breakfast, and a coconut noodle soup are the bowls to know.

Editor’s tip

Order the tea leaf salad and mohinga, and ignore the Americanized dishes at the back of the menu.
