CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN
Bánh Mì Saigon Bakery
A Grand Street counter that has been wrapping chả lụa bánh mì for decades — order the #4.
One of Chinatown's longest-running bánh mì counters, on the Little Italy edge of Grand Street. There is nowhere to sit — just one line to order and another to wait — and the sandwiches come wrapped and heavy, built to be eaten on a bench or walking toward Columbus Park.
Order the #4: chả lụa, the silky Vietnamese pork roll, with cucumber, pickled carrot and jalapeños if you want them, on a baguette served untoasted the way it always has been. The #1 with sweet barbecue pork is a close second. Bring cash.
Editor’s tip
Order the #4 with jalapeños and eat it in Columbus Park, ten minutes south.
