Bonjuk
Korean rice porridge on Northern Boulevard — sweet pumpkin, abalone, bulgogi-octopus.
Juk is what Korea eats when it is under the weather, or tired, or simply wants something gentle — rice cooked down until it is soft and spoonable. Bonjuk is a large chain at home, and this Northern Boulevard branch is where the neighborhood comes for a bowl.
The sweet pumpkin porridge is golden and faintly sweet; abalone porridge is the restorative one, green-flecked and savory; vegetable, bulgogi-octopus and kimchi-octopus versions cover the rest. The bowls come with a few small sides. Reviewers come back when they are unwell, and for the plain comfort of it when they are not.
Editor’s tip
Get the abalone porridge to eat in and a pumpkin porridge to take home.
