SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS

Cardamom

Goan cooking on a Sunnyside side street — vinegar-bright lamb vindaloo and a Bib Gourmand.

A neighborhood Indian restaurant on a side street off Queens Boulevard, with one thing that sets it apart: the chef is from Goa, and the menu has a whole Indo-Portuguese section where the coast's vinegar-and-chili cooking lives. Start there, and be patient — the kitchen takes its time, and the food arrives fresh and hot.

The lamb vindaloo is the Goan original, sharp with vinegar rather than simply hot; the Goan fish curry is its soft, coconut-rich opposite. Beyond the coast, a methi curry of cashews, onions and fenugreek leaves, tandoori lamb chops marinated in yogurt and tamarind, and good breads from the tandoor to mop it all up. Michelin gives it a Bib Gourmand.

Editor’s tip

Order from the Indo-Portuguese section first: vindaloo and Goan fish curry together.
