HELL'S KITCHEN, MANHATTAN

Chalong

Southern Thai on Ninth Avenue — baerng golae shrimp, garlic-braised ribs and a 2025 Bib Gourmand.

Most Thai menus in New York are anchored in Bangkok or the northeast. Chalong, on Ninth Avenue in Hell's Kitchen, cooks the south — the coconut-rich, turmeric-yellow, often fiery food of the peninsula — as a sit-down dinner rather than a quick bowl.

Don't skip the baerng golae, grilled shrimp under a coconut curry and a scatter of toasted coconut. Garlic-braised ribs, fried and served with rice, are the other plate to build around, and the mango sticky rice with coconut ice cream is how to finish. The MICHELIN Guide added it to its Bib Gourmand list in November 2025.

Editor’s tip

Ask the staff how hot the southern curries run before ordering two of them.
