Cookshop
West Chelsea's steady farm-to-table corner, directly across from the High Line.
Cookshop has held its corner of Tenth Avenue since 2005, which in West Chelsea gallery years makes it an institution. The room is tall, bright, and unfussy — white walls, big windows onto the avenue, a long bar — and the kitchen's farm-sourced American cooking has stayed steady while the neighborhood around it turned into the High Line's front yard. Marc Meyer and Vicki Freeman built it on relationships with independent farms, and the menu still reads like a market report.
Brunch is the famous hour, and the wait is real on weekends, but the quieter case for Cookshop is a weekday dinner: gallery-goers at the bar, the High Line's lights across the street, and a plate of roasted chicken or whatever the farms sent that week. Sit near the windows if you can — the avenue does half the entertaining.
Editor’s tip
Pair it with a High Line walk — enter the park at 20th Street and you land a block from the door.
Make an evening of it — beautiful stops nearby
