A small shop on First Avenue that turns out huge bagels, dense at the crust and soft and springy inside — big enough to carry a real breakfast sandwich without falling apart. The pumpernickel and whole wheat are better than they need to be.

Order a bacon, egg and cheese on pumpernickel: dark, faintly earthy, and still soft after toasting. It is the kind of sandwich worth walking past three bodegas for.

Editor’s tip

Order the BEC on pumpernickel and eat it on a bench in Stuyvesant Square, a block west.
