FINANCIAL DISTRICT, MANHATTAN
Delmonico's
The steakhouse that named the steak — Delmonico ribeye, lobster Newburg and baked Alaska on Beaver Street.
The triangular building at Beaver and South William Streets, with its marble columns at the door, is the steakhouse whose name went onto a cut of beef. Delmonico's closed during the pandemic, sat dark through a long legal fight, and reopened here in 2023 with a refurbished dining room: high ceilings, bubble chandeliers and a big painting of Gilded Age society over the room.
Order the dishes the name is tied to — the Delmonico steak, lobster Newburg, a wedge salad and the baked Alaska to finish. The room is Financial District bankers and visitors in equal measure, and it is one of the few places downtown that feels like an occasion.
Editor’s tip
Order the baked Alaska for the table even if you are full — it is the reason to stay for dessert.
