FOREST HILLS, QUEENS

Eddie's Sweet Shop

A century-old ice cream parlor with a marble counter and homemade ice cream, run by the Citrano family since 1968.

There has been an ice cream counter in this storefront at Metropolitan Avenue and 72nd Road for about a century — it was Witt's before it became Eddie's in the 1960s — and the Citrano family has run it since 1968. Vito Citrano, who took over from his father, has changed almost nothing: tin ceiling, wood-paneled walls, a marble counter, an old wooden phone booth.

The ice cream is still made in the back from the family's recipes, along with the toppings. Sit at the counter and order a sundae — the three-scoop version is a project. It feels less like nostalgia than like a place that never saw a reason to change.

Editor’s tip

Sit at the counter rather than a table, and walk here through the Gardens from Station Square.
