PARK SLOPE, BROOKLYN
Fonda
Roberto Santibañez's original — serious Mexico City cooking in a small, warm South Slope room.
Fonda is where Roberto Santibañez — Mexico City born, French-trained — put his cooking when he opened on Seventh Avenue in 2009, and the South Slope has treated it as a local treasure ever since. This is Mexican food built on real technique: enchiladas in a tangy tomatillo sauce, pork braised in adobo, moles that take days rather than hours.
The room is small, warm, and painted in colors that make winter feel optional, with a margarita list that rewards attention. The restaurant later grew siblings in Chelsea, Tribeca, and beyond, but the Park Slope original keeps the neighborhood feel — strollers at brunch, dates by candlelight after dark.
Editor’s tip
Let the mole anchor the table and keep the margaritas classic — the kitchen's sauces are the show here.
