FLATIRON & NOMAD, MANHATTAN
Gramercy Tavern
A walk-in Tavern bar up front and a Michelin-starred dining room behind it, on East 20th Street since 1994.
Two restaurants under one roof. The front Tavern room is loud and warm, with a long bar and an à la carte menu for anyone who walks in; the back Dining Room is quieter, more formal, and serves a tasting menu under a Michelin star. Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group has run it since 1994, and it still feels like a neighborhood place that happens to be excellent.
The best move is the Tavern at lunch or early evening: a seat at the bar, the burger with duck-fat chips, a seasonal pasta, and the chocolate chip cookie with cold milk to finish. Save the Dining Room for an anniversary.
Editor’s tip
