CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN
Great N.Y. Noodletown
Roast ducks in the window, salt-baked squid on the table, and the kitchen running very late.
Great N.Y. Noodletown is the bright, no-frills Cantonese room at Bowery and Bayard that chefs have been naming as their late-night canteen for decades. Roast ducks and strips of crisp-skinned pork hang in the window; the kitchen turns them into rice plates and tosses them over thin egg noodles until very late, and the salt-baked seafood — squid especially — is the sleeper order regulars protect.
The fluorescent light is unflattering and the tables turn fast, which is the format working as intended. Come after a show or late dinner elsewhere, order roast duck on noodles and the salt-baked squid, and you will understand why the room has never needed to change.
Editor’s tip
Order the roast duck over noodles plus one salt-baked seafood dish, and bring cash — the counter has long preferred it.
