MURRAY HILL, QUEENS

Hansol Food

Handmade tteok — songpyeon, layered rice cakes — plus kimchi and ready-made dishes on 162nd Street.

Before birthdays, holidays and Sunday visits to grandparents, Korean families in Queens stop for tteok — rice cakes, steamed and pounded and shaped in a dozen ways. Hansol is one of the places they go: part rice-cake maker, part Korean grocery.

Look for songpyeon, the half-moon cakes of the autumn harvest holiday, and the layered, bean-dusted slabs sold by the piece. The shop also makes its own kimchi and pickles, sells sikhye (sweet rice punch) and a counter of ready-made dishes, and takes catering orders.

Editor’s tip

Go in the morning, when the rice cakes are freshest, and pick up a container of kimchi on the way out.
