CHINATOWN, MANHATTAN
Hwa Yuan
The Tang family's East Broadway dining room — the cold sesame noodles that made the name, then Peking duck.
Hwa Yuan's name runs back to the 1980s and the Tang family, whose cold sesame noodles helped teach New York what Chinese noodles could be. Today the name hangs over a dining room at 42 East Broadway, and the menu is built for sharing at big tables.
The cold sesame noodles are still the reason to come: chilled, slick and nutty, the dish that gave the place its legend. After that, the Peking duck is a strong second act, and the rest of the menu is meant for sharing.
Editor’s tip
Order the cold sesame noodles the moment you sit down, and the duck if you are four or more.
