FLUSHING, QUEENS

Jiang Nan

Flushing's polished Peking duck room — pancakes on a silver tray, soup dumplings and a koi pond.

Jiang Nan is Flushing dressed for an occasion. In One Fulton Square, the dining room is lacquer, stone and hanging greenery, with a koi pond and tables spaced far enough apart for real conversation. This is the original of what has become a small group of restaurants, and it still feels like the flagship.

The menu ranges across China rather than staying in one province, but the reason to come is the roast Beijing duck, carved and brought on a silver tray with thin pancakes. Round it out with soup dumplings and something spicy — the mapo tofu is built to share, and Michelin's inspectors singled out the sliced beef in golden pepper sauce.

Editor’s tip

Order the whole duck for the table, then soup dumplings while you wait for the carving.
