IllustrationThe Pappalardo brothers came from outside Naples in 1958 and opened Joe & Pat's on Victory Boulevard in Staten Island in 1960. It is one of the island's defining pizzerias: a cracker-thin crust and fresh mozzarella. This First Avenue room brought it to Manhattan, along with the family's long menu of calamari, pastas and chicken parm.
Order a pie with one topping, so the crust stays crisp, and the Tri Pie that regulars call the house favorite. If you have been to Rubirosa on Mulberry Street, the resemblance is not an accident: Rubirosa's owners descend from the Joe & Pat's family.
Editor’s tip
Keep the toppings to one — the thin crust is the point.
