UPPER EAST SIDE, MANHATTAN

Kaia

New York's South African table, now on First Avenue — bobotie, malva pudding and Cape wine.

Kaia has been New York's South African table since 2011, cooking from the owner's family farm in the Free State and pouring only South African wine. In January 2026 it moved from Third Avenue to a new room on First Avenue, bringing its Saturday market, its Sunday family-style dinners and its friendly, slightly homesick crowd of expats with it.

South African food is a mix of Dutch, Cape Malay, British and African cooking, and the dishes show it. Order the bobotie, spiced minced meat baked under an egg custard with chutney on the side; tomatiekos, goat braised with tomato; and malva pudding, a warm, sticky apricot sponge. Take home some biltong and boerewors.

Editor’s tip

Have the bobotie and the malva pudding, and ask for a Chenin Blanc to go with them.
