Kape't Torta
A Filipino bakery counter on Queens Boulevard — kapeng barako, torta cebuana, ube pandesal and halo-halo.
A small counter on Queens Boulevard that does what a Filipino panaderya should: strong coffee and a case of soft, sweet breads to take home by the box. Kapeng barako, the dark-roast coffee of Batangas, is the drink; torta cebuana, a buttery little coconut-scented cake from Cebu, is the thing to eat with it.
Ube runs through the case — ube pandesal stuffed with cheese, ube cake, an ube custard cake — next to cheese ensaymada, cheese-drizzled pandesal and a pork asado bun for something savory. There is halo-halo, too. Buy more than you meant to.
Editor’s tip
Take a box of torta cebuana and ube pandesal home — and a kapeng barako for the walk.
