SUNNYSIDE, QUEENS
The Kasbah Café
Sunnyside's Algerian kitchen — couscous, rechta and kalb el louz from a family from Algiers.
Algerian food is very rare in New York, and Halim and Amina Fekraoui, from Algiers and Jijel, have made this small Greenpoint Avenue café its home since 2021. It began with pastries and sandwiches and grew into a full Algerian kitchen, with a different dish of the day and a counter of sweets.
Order the couscous with lamb, or rechta — fine, hand-cut semolina noodles in a white broth with chicken and chickpeas, a dish Algiers families make for celebrations. Chakchouka with merguez is the lighter choice, and the merguez sandwich makes a fast lunch. Finish with kalb el louz, the syrup-soaked semolina-and-almond cake, and a coffee.
Editor’s tip
Ask what the Algerian dish of the day is — and save room for kalb el louz.
