GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN

Kettl Greenpoint

A Japanese tea importer's Greenpoint tea room — stone-ground matcha, hojicha and a six-seat tasting counter.

Kettl started as a Japanese tea importer run by Zach Mangan and his wife, Minami, and its Greenpoint flagship takes up the ground floor of a 1928 brick building — some 3,000 square feet modeled on a Japanese tea parlor, with a communal table, a six-seat tasting counter and shelves of ceramics and whisks.

Matcha is the center of it, stone-ground in-house, whisked to order or poured into a latte. The hojicha drinks are the warmer, toastier alternative, and a matcha parfait covers dessert. If you want to go deeper, the tea classes are well regarded, and the team's matcha-only bar is a few blocks away on Norman Avenue.

Editor’s tip

Order matcha straight rather than as a latte the first time, to taste the tea itself.
