MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN

The Landmark Tavern

An 1868 Irish waterfront saloon in Hell's Kitchen — shepherd's pie, a slow pint and a century and a half of stories.

Patrick Carley, an Irish immigrant, opened this saloon in 1868, when Eleventh Avenue ran along the Hudson and his customers were dockworkers and sailors. The river has since been pushed west, but the tavern stands: a long wooden bar, old saloon fittings, and a third floor that served as a speakeasy during Prohibition.

Eat the Irish classics in a room that has been serving them for generations: shepherd's pie under browned mash, corned beef and cabbage, fish and chips, bangers and mash, and a full Irish breakfast at weekend brunch with rashers and black and white pudding. Pour a slow pint of stout and sit by the window over Eleventh Avenue.

Editor’s tip

Order the shepherd's pie and a pint, and ask to see the old upstairs rooms if it's quiet.
