WEST VILLAGE, MANHATTAN

Leitão

Bacalhau croquettes, piri-piri chicken, pastéis de nata — and fado nights on Hudson Street.

Portuguese food in New York has mostly lived across the river in New Jersey. Leitão brings it to Hudson Street in a corner room with a bar, a dining room and a renovated cellar, and on some nights a fado singer filling the place with saudade.

Order bolinhos de bacalhau, the salt-cod croquettes every Portuguese grandmother makes, then piri-piri chicken, grilled sea bass, or porco preto — the black Iberian pig. Lunch belongs to the francesinha, Porto's preposterous sandwich under melted cheese and beer sauce. End with pastéis de nata, still warm. The namesake suckling pig dinner is a feast for groups, ordered a week ahead.

Editor’s tip

Check the site for fado nights and book one — then order the bacalhau croquettes and a glass of vinho verde.
