COLLEGE POINT, QUEENS

Little Pepper

Plain room, serious Sichuan, worth the trip north — braised fish in red broth, dan dan noodles, Chongqing chicken.

Little Pepper is a plain room well north of downtown Flushing, up College Point Boulevard, and it has drawn a following for years. The decor asks nothing of you. The cooking asks a great deal: this is some of the most fragrant, fiery Sichuan food in the city, heavy on the peppercorn.

Order braised sliced fish in its red broth, dan dan noodles with minced pork, Chongqing chicken buried in dried chilies, and the sliced beef starter. The pickled-vegetable dishes are there for relief, and you will want them.

Editor’s tip

Braised sliced fish and dan dan noodles, with a pickled vegetable dish on the side.
