TRIBECA, MANHATTAN

Locanda Verde

The Greenwich Hotel's corner taverna — ricotta crostini, big windows, and Tribeca at its calmest.

Locanda Verde is the Italian taverna on the ground floor of the Greenwich Hotel, the Tribeca hotel Robert De Niro co-owns, and since 2009 it has been chef Andrew Carmellini's definition of a neighborhood restaurant that happens to be very good: big windows onto Greenwich Street, a long bar, and a room that hums without shouting. The sheep's-milk ricotta with sea salt and herbs, spread on grilled bread, has been the opening move here for over fifteen years.

It is one of the rare downtown rooms equally right at three different hours — a working breakfast, a long weekend brunch, or a proper dinner. Tables by the windows catch the last light off the Hudson blocks; in warm months the sidewalk seats face one of Tribeca's calmest corners.

Editor’s tip

Start with the sheep's-milk ricotta no matter what else you order — it has earned its permanence.
