CARROLL GARDENS, BROOKLYN
Lucali
A candlelit Henry Street pizzeria with a two-item menu, BYOB, and one of Brooklyn's longest waits.
Mark Iacono calls himself an accidental pizzaiolo, and since 2006 he has run Lucali on a residential corner of Henry Street as a labor of love. The room is candlelit, the oven is in full view, and the menu is almost nothing: pizza and calzones. It is also one of the hardest tables in Brooklyn to get.
Order a plain pie and add toppings sparingly — the thin crust, bright sauce and fresh basil are the point — plus a calzone with hot peppers and pepperoni. It's BYOB, so bring a bottle of something red. Expect a long wait; put your name down early and take a walk through the front-garden blocks while you wait.
Editor’s tip
Arrive before opening to put your name down, then walk Carroll and President Streets until your table is ready.
