BUSHWICK, BROOKLYN
Lucy's Vietnamese Kitchen
Pho with Texas-style smoked brisket, from a Bushwick-born chef cooking in his grandmother's name.
Chef Johnny Huynh was born in Bushwick and raised a few blocks from here by his grandmother, Lucy, who came to the United States and worked several jobs to take care of him. The small shop he opened in her name on Irving Avenue is a neighborhood pho counter with one big idea.
That idea is brisket, smoked for hours Texas-style and laid into a bowl of pho, so the broth picks up a little of the smoke. There are chicken and tofu versions and a vegan broth that regulars rate, and the brisket shows up again in a banh mi. It's a quick, warming lunch a few minutes from the Myrtle–Wyckoff station.
Editor’s tip
Get the brisket pho — it's the reason the place exists.
