WILLIAMSBURG, BROOKLYN
Maison Premiere
Oysters, absinthe, and a vine-draped garden — the Vieux Carré by way of Bedford Avenue.
Maison Premiere is Williamsburg's New Orleans fantasy made rigorous: a horseshoe marble bar, an absinthe fountain, waiters in waistcoats, and one of the most serious oyster programs in New York, with a long daily list from both coasts. It opened in 2011 and won a James Beard award for its bar program; the craft has not slipped since.
The garden out back, draped in vines and lit like a Tennessee Williams stage set, may be the most romantic bar seating in Brooklyn. Oyster happy hour is the famous ritual, but a slow evening of martinis and a dozen Island Creeks in the garden is the complete experience.
Editor’s tip
Ask for the garden and start with whatever East Coast oysters the bar recommends that day — then stay past the first round.
