ARTHUR AVENUE, BRONX
Mario's
Five generations of the Migliucci family and a century of Neapolitan cooking on Arthur Avenue.
The Migliucci family opened Mario's on Arthur Avenue in 1919, and five generations later it is still the white-tablecloth anchor of the Bronx's Little Italy — a long, formal-but-friendly room where the Neapolitan cooking predates every food trend it has outlived. The menu runs from a storied thin-crust pizza (once off-menu, now not) through stuffed artichokes, spiedini alla romana, and red-sauce classics done with real conviction.
It is the Arthur Avenue restaurant for the occasion dinner: slower, dressier, and more ceremonial than the trattorias nearby, with career waiters who will steer you well if you let them. A cameo in The Godfather script lore and a century of family photographs on the walls do not hurt the sense of event.
Editor’s tip
Start with the stuffed artichoke and ask your waiter what the kitchen is proud of that night — the oldest rooms reward trust.
