MIDWOOD, BROOKLYN
Moldova
One of the country's only Moldovan dining rooms — polenta with pork stew, sour-cherry dumplings and Moldovan wine.
Moldova sits between Romania and Ukraine, and its cooking borrows from both while keeping its own country manners: cornmeal, sour cream, fresh cheese, wine from its own vineyards. This Coney Island Avenue dining room, open since 2012, is one of the only places in the country to eat it, and the menu is a fine introduction.
Order mămăligă — a golden mound of polenta — with pork tochitură stew, cheese and a fried egg; stuffed cabbage rolls; and the sour-cherry dumplings called colțunași. Ask about Moldovan wine; the country has some of the oldest vineyards in Europe. The room is bright and family-run, built for long Sunday tables.
Editor’s tip
The mămăligă with tochitură is the dish — share it, plus a plate of sour-cherry dumplings for the table.
