FLUSHING, QUEENS

Nan Xiang Xiao Long Bao

Flushing's defining soup-dumpling house — glass-walled pleaters and the pork-and-crab standard since 2006.

Nan Xiang has been Flushing's defining soup-dumpling house since 2006, and the 2019 move into a gleaming 150-seat room at One Fulton Square only sharpened the operation: pleaters working in glass-walled view, bamboo steamers arriving in relays, and the pork-and-crab xiao long bao still the standard other New York dumplings get measured against. The 'Lucky Six' sampler steams one of each color — truffle, squash, chicken among them — in a single basket.

The restaurant has since grown into a small East Coast empire, but the Prince Street flagship is where the lines still form first. Put your name in, wander Flushing's malls for twenty minutes, and come back hungry; turnover is brisk and the steamers move fast.

Editor’s tip

Order the Lucky Six basket for the tour, then a second round of the classic pork-and-crab — the original is still the best one.
