MIDTOWN, MANHATTAN
New Wonjo
Charcoal-grilled galbi on 32nd Street since 1993 — old Koreatown, open very late.
Most of 32nd Street has moved on to gas and induction. New Wonjo, on the block since 1993, kept its wood-charcoal grills, and reviewers keep coming back for exactly that. The room is old-Koreatown: crowded, smoky, and open late.
Order galbi over the coals, chadol (thin brisket) and pork belly, and let the servers handle the tongs. The kitchen side is worth a look too — bossam, mandu, bibimbap and noodle soups — which makes it as good for a late supper as for a full barbecue.
Editor’s tip
Ask for a charcoal grill table and order galbi and chadol for two.
