GREENPOINT, BROOKLYN
Peter Pan Donut & Pastry Shop
Counter stools, paper hats, and the borough's most loved donuts — Greenpoint since the 1950s.
Peter Pan has been frying donuts on Manhattan Avenue since the early 1950s, and walking in still feels like stepping into the neighborhood's Greek-American past: a long counter with vinyl stools, staff in paper hats, trays of sour cream glazed and red velvet moving fast from before dawn. The Siafakas family has kept it defiantly unchanged.
The doors open before sunrise and the best flavors are gone by mid-morning, which tells you everything about the local devotion. Take a bag to McCarren Park or eat at the counter with coffee in a proper diner mug — either way, it's one of Brooklyn's last great old-school bakeries, and it has outlived every trend that was supposed to replace it.
Editor’s tip
Sour cream glazed, early, eaten on a counter stool — don't overthink a thing that's been right for seventy years.
