ASTORIA, QUEENS

Pye Boat Noodle

Astoria's boat-noodle house — beef or pork in a deep broth with meatballs and pork rinds, and a summer backyard.

The name comes from the Thai word for a paddle — a nod to the boat vendors who once sold noodles from the canals of Bangkok. The room on Broadway is small and dim, with a backyard that opens when the weather turns warm, and the tables come stocked with fish sauce and jars of chili for seasoning.

Order the boat noodles, with beef or pork in a deep, spiced broth topped with meatballs and crackling pork rinds, and season the bowl yourself. Yen ta fo, the pink, sweet-sour noodle soup, is the second bowl to try, and the cube-shaped chive cakes make a good start.

Editor’s tip

Ask for a backyard table in warm weather and season the boat noodles at the table, a little at a time.
