FORT GREENE, BROOKLYN

Roman's

Andrew Tarlow's daily-changing Italian menu a block off Fort Greene Park — small room, total conviction.

Roman's is Andrew Tarlow's Fort Greene restaurant — sibling to Diner and Marlow & Sons across the borough — and since 2009 it has cooked a seasonal Italian menu that changes every single day. The room is small and burnished: a marble bar, warm bulbs, a daily-printed menu short enough to read twice and trust completely.

That daily rewrite is the whole philosophy. Whatever the farms sent decides the pasta; the negroni variations rotate on their own calendar. It sits a block from Fort Greene Park on the DeKalb Avenue restaurant row, and an early table followed by a dusk loop of the park is one of brownstone Brooklyn's most dependable evenings.

Editor’s tip

Check the day's menu online at five, walk over by six — the kitchen's first hour is its calmest and best.
