BROOKLYN HEIGHTS, BROOKLYN
Sahadi's
The Lebanese family grocery that has anchored Atlantic Avenue since the 1940s — James Beard's America's Classic in 2017.
Abrahim Sahadi, a Lebanese immigrant, opened his first shop on Washington Street in Manhattan's Little Syria in 1895. In the 1940s the family moved the business to Atlantic Avenue, and the store has anchored the avenue's Middle Eastern row ever since. The James Beard Foundation named it one of America's Classics in 2017.
This is the place to stock a pantry — spices, dried fruit, nuts, olives, cheeses and prepared Middle Eastern foods — and the family still runs it, now with a second location in Industry City. Come before lunch, buy more than you planned, and eat it on a bench in Cobble Hill Park.
Editor’s tip
Pick up a container of prepared food and some olives, and carry them to Cobble Hill Park, five minutes away.
