IllustrationApril Bloomfield and Gabriel Stulman opened Sailor on DeKalb Avenue in 2023, and demand for its small room has outrun the tables ever since. It is a small, storybook bistro: little lamps on the tables, paintings of schooners, a wine fridge covered in dry-erase scribbles. In 2025 it took over the storefront next door and added a tavern room with oak paneling, brass lamps and a model ship at the back.
The menu changes often but reads like a classic New York bistro done with unusual conviction — a caesar heavy with dressing, a butterflied branzino under a dripping relish, roast chicken rubbed with garlic-herb butter, and both a beef and a lamb burger. The New York Times put it on its 2025 list of the city's 100 best restaurants.
Editor’s tip
No reservation? Walk in early and ask for a seat at the tavern bar, where the full menu is served.
