CITY ISLAND, BRONX

Sammy's Fish Box

Seafood towers and tropical drinks at the island's big, year-round family feast since 1966.

Sammy's has been feeding City Island's weekend pilgrims since 1966, and it remains the island's maximalist: a sprawling, nautical-kitsch dining room near the southern end of the avenue where seafood arrives in towers — lobsters, snow crab, fried combination platters built for sharing, pitchers of tropical drinks alongside. Nobody leaves hungry; most leave with boxes.

It is open year-round and late, which makes it the dependable end to an island afternoon of antique shops and shoreline views. Come with a group, order one platter fewer than feels right, and lean into the occasion of the place — City Island does not do understatement, and neither does Sammy's.

Editor’s tip

Split the fried combination platter among the table and keep one order of coconut shrimp to yourself — portions here are a group project.
