Jim Lahey opened Sullivan Street Bakery in SoHo in 1994, after failing to find bread in New York like the crusty loaves he'd eaten as an art student in Italy. He went on to publish the no-knead bread method that home bakers everywhere now know, and to win the James Beard award for Outstanding Baker. The Ninth Avenue café is the bakery's Chelsea storefront.

Think of it as a Roman bakery in spirit: crusty hand-shaped loaves, Roman-style pizzas by the slab, and rolls and sweets baked at the main bakery in Hell's Kitchen. Grab a square of pizza for now and a loaf to carry home.

Editor’s tip

Pick up a slab of pizza for a picnic on the High Line, two avenues west.
