RED HOOK, BROOKLYN
Sunny's Bar
A Red Hook saloon since 1890, with weekend bluegrass jams and a century of waterfront history on the walls.
A bar has stood on this Conover Street corner since 1890, when it opened as John's Bar and Restaurant to serve sailors and stevedores. It stayed in the Balzano family for generations; Antonio 'Sunny' Balzano grew up upstairs, came back in the 1990s to run it, and turned it into a gathering place for artists and musicians before his death in 2016. Hurricane Sandy flooded it in 2012, and the neighborhood helped pay to bring it back.
It still feels like a living room that happens to serve beer — dim light, dusty nautical bric-a-brac, a back yard for fresh air. Come on a Friday or Saturday night for the bluegrass jam, when musicians pull chairs into a circle and play until late. Nothing about it is polished, which is the whole appeal.
Editor’s tip
Come on a weekend night for the bluegrass jam, then walk to Valentino Pier for the harbor at dark.
