FLUSHING, QUEENS

Szechuan Mountain House

Lantern-lit Sichuan with a flair for theater — the Flushing original, pork belly on a clothesline and all.

Born in Flushing before it spread to the East Village and beyond, Szechuan Mountain House dresses serious Sichuan cooking in a dark, lantern-lit teahouse room — carved wood screens, draped booths, the theater of the swing pork belly arriving on a miniature clothesline over chili-garlic sauce. Behind the staging, the kitchen is precise: mapo tofu with real má numbing heat, dry-pot cauliflower, and a pastrami-tender boiled fish in roiling chili broth.

The Flushing original at One Fulton Square remains the one to know, steps from the Main Street terminus of the 7. Weekend waits are real; weeknight early seatings are the quiet way in.

Editor’s tip

Get the swing pork belly for the table and the mapo tofu for yourself — and order rice early, you will want it.
