Taku Sando
Pork katsu sandos on house-baked milk bread at the river end of Greenpoint Avenue.
Down at the river end of Greenpoint Avenue, the team behind Long Island City's Takumen opened this sando shop in late 2023, and the queue on weekends says it worked. Everything starts with the bread: house-baked Japanese milk bread, soft and pillowy, with the leftover loaves ground into panko.
The ton-katsu sando is the order — a thick pork cutlet with slivered cabbage, pickles, sweet katsu sauce and a karashi-mustard mayo. The tamago sando and the croquette sandwich are the alternates, and the ribbon fries come dusted with dashi furikake. There are a few tables and a back patio; Transmitter Park is a two-minute walk if you'd rather eat by the water.
Editor’s tip
Take a ton-katsu sando and ribbon fries to the benches in Transmitter Park.
