Tompkins Square Bagels opened on Avenue A in 2011, a block from the park it is named for, and grew into a small Manhattan chain without losing its flagship's neighborhood feel. The bagels are kettle-boiled and airy, made with sandwiches in mind, and the cream cheeses are made in-house.

The order is a bacon, egg and cheese on an everything bagel. Carry it a block south and eat it in Tompkins Square Park while the dog run wakes up.

Editor’s tip

Look over the house cream cheeses before you commit — then get the BEC anyway.
