DUMBO, BROOKLYN

Vinegar Hill House

A wood-fired hideaway on a gas-lit Belgian-block street, five minutes and a century from DUMBO.

Technically this is Vinegar Hill — the pocket of Belgian-block streets and gas lamps just east of DUMBO proper — and the short walk over is most of the charm. Vinegar Hill House occupies an old storefront on Hudson Avenue, candlelit and low-ceilinged, cooking from a wood-fired oven that has made its cast-iron chicken and sourdough pancake minor Brooklyn legends since 2008.

There is almost nothing else on the block, which is the point: you step out of the DUMBO crowds, cross under the bridge approach, and land on a street that still looks like the 1840s. A back garden opens in warm months. It remains one of the city's most reliable answers to 'somewhere special that doesn't feel like a production.'

Editor’s tip

Arrive early and walk Hudson Avenue's gas-lamp block before dinner — it's one of the last streets like it in New York.

Make an evening of it — beautiful stops nearby
