Walter's is a neighborhood restaurant in the most useful sense: simple classics done well, a raw bar, a bartender who knows the regulars by name, and a room that works for weekend brunch, oysters before a night out or dinner before a game at Barclays. It is the Fort Greene sibling of Williamsburg's Walter Foods.

Order oysters and deviled eggs to start, then the French dip with horseradish and jus or the cheeseburger. In the back is Karasu, a separate, dimmer Japanese-style bar with Japanese whisky, cocktails and karaage — a good place to end up.

Editor’s tip

Have dinner at Walter's, then walk through to Karasu in the back for a whisky and an order of karaage.
