Wo Hop

Down the stairs since 1938 — a Beard America's Classic where the walls remember everyone.

Wo Hop has been serving Cantonese-American food down a steep flight of stairs at 17 Mott Street since 1938, and the basement room — walls shingled with decades of customer photographs and signed headshots — is one of the last of its kind. The James Beard Foundation named it an America's Classic in 2022, which only made official what generations of cab drivers, cops, and post-midnight New Yorkers already knew.

The menu is old-school by intention: wonton soup, roast pork chow fun, egg rolls the size of burritos. In 2025 the family added a street-level dining room upstairs, but the basement is still the experience — go down the stairs, order without overthinking, and add your receipt to ninety years of them.

Editor’s tip

Choose the original basement room over the newer upstairs — and bring cash in case, as old Chinatown counters prefer it.
