FLUSHING, QUEENS

Yeh's Bakery

A Taiwanese bakery by the Botanical Garden, famous for a chocolate-free Boston cream sponge cake.

Down Main Street, past the busy blocks, near the Queens Botanical Garden, a small, long-running Taiwanese bakery has made its name on sponge cake. The case is mostly cakes and cookies, and the regulars come for one thing in particular: a Boston cream pie with no chocolate at all, just tender sponge and a cloud of whipped cream.

Add a box of flaky cookies, and in autumn, mooncakes. Many people carry their cake across the street to the garden and make an afternoon of it, which is exactly the right idea.

Editor’s tip

Buy the Boston cream pie and eat it in the Botanical Garden.
