Yemen Cafe
Atlantic Avenue's Yemeni dining room since the 1980s — free lamb broth, haneeth and bubbling foul.
Yemen Cafe has been feeding Atlantic Avenue since the mid-1980s, and the dining room looks it, in a good way. It calls itself the first Yemeni restaurant in the United States, and it has since opened branches in Bay Ridge and on Staten Island.
Every meal starts with marag, a free cup of thin golden lamb broth, and puffy flatbread. Order lamb haneeth, roasted for hours until it falls from the bone, and foul — fava beans stewed with tomato — bubbling in a cast-iron pot. Chicken saltah, a root-vegetable stew sharp with fenugreek, and fatah with honey, yogurt and black sesame round out a feast for very little money.
Editor’s tip
Order the lamb haneeth and the honey fatah, and drink the marag while it's hot.
